Stainless steel is one of the most durable kitchenware materials available, but even the best 304-grade steel needs proper care to maintain its shine and food-safety properties.
Everyday Cleaning
Wash with warm water and mild dish soap after each use. Dry immediately with a soft cloth to prevent water spots. For stubborn food residue, soak in warm soapy water for 15–30 minutes, then scrub gently with a non-scratch sponge.
Removing Discolouration
Rainbow-coloured heat tint (a sign of overheating) can be removed with a paste of baking soda and water. Apply, leave for 5 minutes, then wipe with a damp cloth. White calcium deposits from hard water can be dissolved with a solution of equal parts water and white vinegar.
What to Avoid
Never use steel wool or abrasive cleaners — they scratch the surface and create sites for rust. Avoid bleach and chlorinated cleaners, which attack the passive oxide layer that makes stainless steel rust-resistant. Do not store wet steel products in closed cupboards.
